What is Mardi Gras?

Almost everyone has heard of Mardi Gras, but many people do not know exactly what it is. So here is a brief summary of the holiday’s origin. In Christian communities around the world, the forty days preceding Easter, comprise Lent, a period of fasting and penitence. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, the day many Catholics go to church to receive the sign of the cross marked in ashes on their foreheads to remind them of their own mortality. For much of the country, the Tuesday before Lent is just that, a Tuesday, but in New Orleans, this Tuesday is “Mardi Gras” or “Fat Tuesday”, representing the last gasp of decadence before a period of austerity.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels Mardi Gras Celebration February 26, 2008

This annual spectacular event for Lubbock Meals on Wheels will include thirty food booths (with selections from your favorite local restaurants), live jazz music, a large silent auction, cash bar, a "French Market Area", plus a variety of entertainment such as: jugglers, mimes, tap dancers, and clowns. Children’s activities include: face and hair painting, crafts, and a variety of games and prizes. Colorful masks and beads will be available to make the evening even more festive. Guests will also enjoy an authentic Mardi Gras “King Cake” and flamboyant decorations in the official Mardi Gras colors of purple (for justice), green (for faith), and gold (for power).

Mardi Gras King and Queen

In keeping with Mardi Gras tradition, a King and Queen will be selected. The King and Queen will assist in promoting the fundraiser and will appear the night of the event to reign over their loyal subjects by passing out candy and beads. Of course, they will be adorned in regal attire as they lead the Fat Tuesday festivities.

How Can I Celebrate Mardi Gras?

Tickets are $25 for adults ($30 at the door), $10 for children under 12, and can be purchased in advance at Lubbock Meals on Wheels or at the door the night of the event. We accept cash, check, or credit cards and will be happy to mail tickets or put them in a file to hold at the door.
